Visine A.C. is a sterile, isotonic, buffered ophthalmic solution containing tetrahydrozoline hydrochloride 0.05% and zinc sulfate 0.25%. Visine A.C. is a fast-acting, dual-action ophthalmic solution combining the effects of the vasoconstrictor, tetrahydrozoline hydrochloride, with the astringent effects of zinc sulfate. The vasoconstrictor provides temporary relief of conjunctival edema, hyperemia and discomfort, while zinc sulfate helps to relieve itching and burning discomfort due to airborne irritants such as pollen, dust and ragweed.
Tetrahydrozoline hydrochloride is a sympathomimetic agent, which brings about decongestion by vasoconstriction. Reddened eyes are rapidly whitened by this effective vasoconstrictor which limits the local vascular response by constricting the small blood vessels. The onset of vasoconstriction becomes apparent within minutes. Zinc sulfate is an ocular astringent which, by precipitating protein, helps to clear mucus from the outer surface of the eye. The effectiveness of Visine A.C. in temporarily relieving conjunctival hyperemia and eye discomfort due to pollen, dust and ragweed has been clinically demonstrated. In one double-blind study of subjects who experienced acute episodes of minor eye irritation, Visine A.C. produced statistically significant beneficial results versus a placebo of normal saline solution in relieving irritation of bulbar conjunctivae, irritation of palpebral conjunctivae and mucus buildup. Treatment with Visine A.C. also significantly relieved eye discomfort.
