Each teaspoonful (5ml) contains iodide 249 mg (1.95 mEq) as the potassium salt in a black raspberry flavored syrup.
Potassium iodide expectorant to liquefy mucus. When administered prior to and following administration of radioactive isotopes and in radiation emergencies involving the release of radioactive iodine, potassium iodide protects the thyroid gland by blocking the thyroidal uptake of radioactive isotopes of iodine.
As an expectorant in the symptomatic treatment of chronic pulmonary diseases where tenacious mucus complicates the problem, including bronchial asthma, bronchitis and pulmonary emphysema.
Potassium iodide is indicated as a radiation protectant (thyroid gland) prior to and following oral administration or inhalation of radioactive isotopes of iodine or in radiation emergencies.
Children--one half to one tsps. and adults one or two tsps. every 4-6 hours.
In patients sensitive to iodides, hyperthyroidism, rare cases of iodine-induced goiter and patients with renal disorders.
Allergic reactions, specifically angioedema, arthralgia, eosinophilia, swelling of lymph nodes and urticaria may require medical attention. Nausea, vomiting, minor skin eruptions, gastrointestinal upset, epigastric pain. Iodism and potassium toxicity may occur with prolonged use. Metallic after-taste has been reported.
Discontinue use if skin rash or other evidence of hypersensitivity appears.
As an expectorant, children under three--1/2 tsp. three times daily. Children over three--one tsp. three times daily. Adults--one or two tsps. three times daily. Take at least 4-6 oz. of water with each dose.
As a Radiation Protectant, infants up to 1 year of age: 1 ml once a day 24 hours prior to and for ten days following administration of, or exposure to, radioactive isotopes of iodine. Children over 1 year of age: 2 ml once a day 24 hours prior to and for ten days following administration of, or exposure to, radioactive isotopes of iodine. Adults: 3 ml once a day 24 hours prior to and for ten days following administration of, or exposure to, radioactive isotopes of iodine.
